Details
This 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Coupe is one of 311 hand-built 300SL Gullwings produced at the Mercedes-Benz factory in Stuttgart, Germany. This example, Chassis No. 198.040.6500165, has been extensively detailed and sorted, and retains the original fuel-injected 3.0-liter inline-6 Engine No. 6500153, paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. There was a complete engine rebuild to factory specifications, including honed cylinders, along with new pistons, valves, valve guides, bearings and timing chains, as well as a rebuilt fuel injection pump and injectors, recored original radiator and oil cooler, and new thermostats for the engine and injection system. The front and rear brakes, as well as the front and rear suspension, were rebuilt. Belly pans from MB Classic were fitted, and a Mercedes Classic windshield was installed. It is finished in the factory color combination of DB190-code Graphite Gray with a DB955-code Light Gray leather interior. The interior features leather upholstery on the seats, dash and side panels, and the headliner, door upholstery and visors are also matching. It is equipped with a factory-option Nardi steering wheel. This 300SL was originally special-ordered new by Max Hoffmann/Mercedes Benz Distributors, Inc.

, in New York, NY, in the spring of 1956, on behalf of client George Sterner of York, PA. The Sterner family owned this 300SL over the next 22 years, before agreeing to sell it in 1978 to a surgeon outside of Pittsburgh, Dr. Edward C. Falk and his young son, Richard, from New Kensington, PA. The car is said to have had around 10,000 miles at that time. Care of this 300SL passed to Dr. Richard Falk in 1998. The sale includes three boxes of documentation and miscellaneous items. From The Robert O'Connor Collection.
