This is a well-optioned low-mileage one-owner Beck 550 Spyder that was delivered new in December 2002. It is equipped with the optional 2165cc engine, which dynoed at 182hp. This combined with the car’s approximately 1300-1400lb weight makes this car an absolute riot. The car is also equipped with CNC ported heads, stainless steel fuel lines, MSD ignition, rear disc brakes, polished aluminum intake, linkage, carb covers, and finned valve covers.

This car is currently in Lafayette, CA.

the model
The Porsche 550 Spyder is one of the all time great Porsche racing cars. Among Porsche’s first dedicated race cars (since the 356 was first and foremost a street car), the 550 Spyder removed all doubt about what the small new German sports car company was all about. The 550 consistently gave cars of twice the displacement a run for their money, including a win at the 1956 Targa Florio, which proved that the new company, which was just five years old when the 550 first appeared, was serious about motorsport. If that wasn’t enough, the car was catapulted to stardom when James Dean died at the wheel of his own 550 Spyder in September 1955. Consequently, the 550 is often replicated, and as always, the quality varies widely from manufacturer to manufacturer. The 550’s produced by Chuck Beck are regarded to be the best around, capturing the essence of the original 550, and combining it with robust mechanicals and a range of options to suit owners’ preferences.

history
This particular car is a factory built example completed in December 2002. It has had only one owner, and was nicely optioned with a 2165cc engine with CNC ported heads, which produced 182hp on the dyno. The car was also fitted with MSD ignition, stainless steel fuel lines, rear disc brakes (front disc brakes are standard), finned aluminum valve covers, and polished aluminum intake, throttle linkage, and carburetor covers. With a curb weight in the neighborhood of 1300 to 1400 pounds, the car is an absolute riot to drive. The car has an indicated 679km from new, and remains in very good condition throughout.

Condition
Costmetically, the car is in very nice condition, as would be expected by a collector-owned with low mileage. The only blemishes worth noting are a scratch in the driver’s door and a scrape on the corner of the front right fender below the headlamp. The paintwork is otherwise like new. The chrome and trim are excellent throughout, as are the badges, which have a lovely evocative period appearance. The lights and glazing are excellent.

The interior is also very nice. The instruments have correct green font and are excellent, though horn button badge on the steering wheel is missing. The dashboard is excellent, and the carpets and upholstery are very nice as well. The car is fitted with modern competition style lap belts and a roll bar.

The engine compartment and front compartment are both tidy throughout, and the car comes with its original order sheet, dyno sheet, and receipts for servicing performed.

This is a great opportunity to acquire an evocative and fun car with superb performance. Well-optioned and with low mileage, this is a great example that is sure to bring a great deal of pleasure to its new owner, and represents outstanding value as well.
